Upon arrival

In Torino you will be staying at the Residence Santa Giulia, via Santa Giulia 41, half a mile from the historic center of the city. Click here for information on how to get to the residence from Torino or Malpensa airports and from Porta Nuova train station.

The Residence is located in the lively Borgo Vanchiglia, a neighborhood close to the historic center and full of bars, restaurants and independent shops, very popular with young people.

At the Residence, as in Torino and Italy in general, you can drink tap water.

The nearest pharmacies are Farmacia Santa Giulia (via Santa Giulia 38, almost in front of the Residence) and Farmacia Nazionale (via Vanchiglia 19/A, less than two minutes’ walk away). The closest supermarket is Conad (v) a four-minute walk.

In case of any problem, call Prof. Erspamer. You may also call Residence Santa Giulia, +39 011 436 7000.

Residence Santa Giulia’s rooms are reserved starting on Monday, June 15.

If you do not have an international phone plan or you want to save on local and international calls, as soon as possible after arriving in Torino purchase an Italian SIM card for your American GSM-compatible smartphone. Click here for more information.

If you arrive in Milan directly from the United States or another country that has a significant time difference from Italy, DO NOT go to sleep during the day of your arrival. Distract yourself, go outside, drink coffee or tea; it is important that you resist sleep until at least 9 or 10 p.m. This is the best way to overcome jet lag more quickly.

Classes will be held at the Scienza Nuova Institute. The address of Scienza Nuova is corso Rodolfo Montevecchio 38. The photograph on the left shows the building that houses Scienza Nuova. Enter through the door hidden by scaffolding and go up to the first floor.

Learn how to reach the Scienza Nuova Institute from the residence. Leaving the Residence, turn right onto Via Santa Giulia and continue for about 100 meters until you reach the Guastalla bus stop. Take the STAR 1 bus (it runs every 40 minutes; please note that this is a small bus that cannot transport our entire group at once). Get off at the Galileo Ferraris stop (the tenth stop). Walk for three minutes to the Institute.
Otherwise, exit the Residence and turn left onto Via Santa Giulia and walk for 150 meters until you reach Via Vanchiglia; turn left and after a few meters you will arrive at the Santa Giulia stop. Take tram 15 (runs every 10 minutes). Get off at the Legnano stop (the tenth stop). Walk for eight minutes until you reach the Institute.
To return to the Residence Santa Giulia, walk for six minutes to the Stati Uniti stop (at the intersection of corso Duca degli Abruzzi and corso Stati Uniti), then take tram 15 towards Coriolano and get off at the Santa Giulia stop (the twelfth stop). Walk for five minutes to the Residence.
Otherwise, walk for three minutes to the Galileo Ferraris stop and take bus STAR 1 towards Vanchiglia/Corso Farini. Get off at the Santa Giulia stop. Walk for eight minutes to the Residence.
If it’s not too hot, you can also walk from the residence to Scienza Nuova; it takes about 50 minutes through the lovely streets of the city center.

Weekends are meant for resting, visiting Torino (and Piedmont), Trento (and Trentino) and Siena (and Tuscany), and studying. It is not a good idea to take a trip every weekend or to go too far.
You must inform Prof. Erspamer of every trip you plan and of every night you decide not to spend in our residences or outside Torino, Trento and Siena. You can travel every weekend except July 4-5 and August 15-16.
Travel outside Italy is not permitted.
